Albany, N.Y. — Election Night 2025 marked a major step forward for election reforms across New York State, and Unite NY, the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering voters, was at the forefront.
In Onondaga County, voters overwhelmingly approved term limits for county legislators, with 71% voting “yes.” The measure increases legislative terms from two to four years and limits service to three consecutive terms, or 12 years total — a change that will bring fresh voices, new perspectives, and more accountability to local government.
Unite NY and its community showed up to bring this important reform across the finish line with volunteers canvassing at the polls and educating voters about term limits and other key election reforms.
Unite NY has long been a proponent of term limits as one of its Five Pillars of Reform, as founder and board member, Martin Babinec, recently wrote, “Term limits are one of Unite NY’s Five Pillars of Reform, which also include ranked choice voting, citizen ballot initiatives, open primaries and better ballot access. These reforms together would give citizens more choices, ensure accountability, and make our government more responsive to the people it serves.”
Onondaga County, the most recent municipality to pass term limits, is a model for election reform across New York State.
