5 Pillars of Reform.

For too long, New York’s political system has been a clear example of all that’s wrong with politics. We need transformational change: a more dynamic, participatory, and representative democracy where citizens feel empowered and engaged in the electoral process. To accomplish this, we have identified five fundamental reforms that will significantly increase our chances of reaching that goal.

A System that Needs Reform

New York's political system doesn’t serve New Yorkers the way it should. Too few voters feel their voice matters, and too much power rests with party leaders, special interests, and entrenched incumbents rather than with citizens.

The structure itself is part of the problem. Restrictive ballot access keeps new candidates off the ballot. Closed primaries shut out independent voters. Unlimited terms protect incumbents from accountability. Winner-take-all elections amplify the loudest voices over the broadest ones. And New Yorkers have few direct paths to put the issues they care about on the ballot. Together, these rules limit competition, dampen participation, and erode confidence that government can deliver for the people it serves.

The Path Forward

New York deserves a more dynamic, participatory, and representative democracy—one where citizens feel empowered and engaged, and where elections produce leaders focused on solving problems.

We've identified five fundamental reforms that will move New York toward that goal that together comprise the five pillars of Unite NY's reform agenda.
