Have Something to Say? Write a Letter to the Editor
Barbara Collura
Unite NY is working to fix a broken election system in New York—and we need your voice.
Right now, it’s hard for everyday New Yorkers to run for office, and even harder to win if you’re not part of the political machine. Most elections are uncompetitive. Local races go unopposed. Voters are stuck choosing between the lesser of two evils. And with one-party rule in Albany, elected officials often serve their party’s interests—not the people’s.
That’s where you come in.

A simple, effective way to spread the word about real solutions—like giving voters more choices and more voices—is by writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.
Letters to the editor have real impact. They influence public opinion. They let your neighbors know change is possible. They even help shape how editorial boards and elected officials view the issues. Your letter can spark conversations, shift perspectives, and build momentum behind our shared goals.
You don’t have to be a professional writer. You don’t have to be political. You just have to care—and be willing to share your story and your perspective.
Unite NY can help you get started! Join our letter-writing team and we’ll send you a simple toolkit: tips on how to write an effective letter, key talking points, and examples to guide you. Whether you send one letter a year or one a month, your voice makes a difference.
This movement grows from the ground up. That means people like you, speaking out, challenging the status quo, and pushing for reforms that put voters first.
So if you’re frustrated with politics as usual, don’t stay silent. Pick up your pen—or keyboard—and speak out. Write a letter. Share your voice. Help fix New York’s broken system. To get started contact Barbara Collura at barbarac2263@gmail.com.
